Electronics have evolved quite a bit since the 1980’s, when electronics displays really started to make their mark on the world. It’s interesting to see the hardware and electronics behind each evolution, as we can use it to better understand where the industry came from and where it’s going.
When you use a simple calculator, you might notice that the display you are using is very basic. This display is a liquid crystal display, or LCD display. It comes in many forms, as you will see the same technologies present in current computer monitors. LCD technology has been around for many years and continues to evolve itself as a technology product.
The expensive high definition televisions that can be bought today are often using plasma as the display technology. Plasma is nothing new, believe it or not! Plasma was employed in older computer displays, but could only use one color due to limitations in technology back then. Plasma screens are much more advanced today, and are able to display millions of different hues and colors down to a single pixel.
As far as light efficiency goes, LED lights rank among the best in energy consumption. LED lights are used in practical applications for the most part since they are not as flexible as other display technologies. Often you will see LED lights in your computer as an indicator that your computer is on, for instance. LED lighting is making a huge stir in the home lighting sector as well, where consumers have found that these efficient lights also save money on energy bills.
The CRT monitors of the past still have their role in computer monitors, but are much less popular than they once were. During the 1990’s they were the standard in computer monitors and televisions. They were eventually weeded out as newer technologies took the lead, such as the LCD screens that have emerged. The problem is that CRT monitors are too bulky and conserve too much energy compared to new displays, and also are not as definitive in resolution quality.
At this point, the industry is looking more at innovation than a way to make current technologies smaller and more efficient. Focus has been put on technologies such as touch capability- which has exploded into the retail market. It has also been used dominantly in the mobile phone market, that has been able to create many innovative mobile phone designs as a result of trends in touch screen displays.

Electronics displays have evolved so much in just thirty years. In another thirty years, we will likely see a new industry completely. Electronics will continue to become more efficient with each passing day, and employ new innovations to make us rethink how electronics can be used.
